Mong Kok, Books, and Comicon HK

We had a few things on our
"To Do" list yesterday...

Namely,
head back to the school and pick up book/uniforms.

Look for a Costume for Logan....

and probably most IMPORTANTLY to the kids

See if we can get presale tix to
the Hong Kong Anime/Comic Expo
(the reason for the costumes)

It is a 2 Day event.
The kids just barely missed
Anime Expo in LA,
and have been looking forward to going to this one.

Originally, there weren't any presale for tix listed...
It just said buy at the door...
Good Luck, basically.
In the last few days, I noticed a tiny print listed
(after it was translated)
where we could get a limited number of presale tix...
But all the locations were tiny, obscure places downtown - somewhere?!

Holy Moly is it hard to find a place downtown,
real downtown.
Not Gwyelo town, as the locals call where the foreigners hang out.
Almost an entire block will be listed as "608 Nathan"
and in that block there are TONS of small door ways
that lead to giant, tall malls.
Now finding the one you are looking for can be tricky,
especially when NO ONE speaks English,
and most signs are in traditional Chinese!

Ok, that is part of the adventure and made it more fun.
It is like we are always on a scavenger hunt....

It was VERY HOT,
VERY HOT, SUPER HUMID,
and we walked A LOT...
and climbed a bazillion stairs,
but my kids were in LOVE with Mong Kok.
They didn't complain at all, once...

Here are some pics from our adventure.

Bonus Pic to start,
Kayla, with her hair straightened for fun.

An example of an 'entrance' to a mall.
Yah, what does that say?
The third symbol means center, I know.
The last one means heart...
the first two, not sure?
And when they are combined
it probably means something different.
 The city streets are crowded...
Yes, we probably stood out like a neon beacon

The children were insistent on walking
up every stairway we could.
Little, narrow, claustrophobic stairways.
No, I am not whining, ok, maybe a little...

Since we weren't sure where the correct mall was,
we decided to just check all of them.

Signs like this one are posted everywhere.
Pictures are NOT ALLOWED in HK,
and if they see you, they FREAK...
So, that is why pics are blurry and phone quality.
I did my best to take a few on the sly.

This area of one mall wasn't open,
so I figured you could get an idea of how the stores are set up.
 much more impressive open.

 Birdy for Kay

Pic for my sister, Samantha.
 We found HER store.  (:

We ventured, and ventured and ventured...
Finally, we found this little obscure book store on the 6th floor
of some business like building.
The entrance for the building was tiny...
I would never have guessed there was a bookstore there.
I printed out a copy of the Comicon website page
in case people didn't understand us...
Which was helpful, but they were sold OUT!!!
I don't know much canto,
but I do know how to ask where we can get more.
The guy was helpful,
knew a couple words of English and told us
to go to Sino Mall (KC is that right?)
Basically, we walked back out on the street,
went left walked thirty seconds and it was there.
Another doorway that lead to the LARGEST
Anime (almost exclusively) MALL
I have EVER Seen.

Now, the guy didn't know which store had the tix.
Just that there was one there...
Oh my, we went store to store showing them the printout
and asking...
No one really knew...
Then we walked into one little store and saw a FLYER for it!
We thought this MUST be the place!
showed her the print out asked about tix?
She said, no.
So, we continued asking store to store, floor to floor...
Then...
I thought, it doesn't make sense, but
I BET that store that had the flyer has the tickets.
She just didn't understand.
So, the kids hustled back down and pointed to the FLYER.
Ta-DA, she got it!
Yes, she had tickets!
Haawwleigghlooyaaahh!

We were pretty hot, tired, sweaty, feet hurt,
but we hadn't picked up books and uniforms yet,
so headed to the school.

We had the opportunity to wait in line for over an hour to get them,
just bad timing when we arrived.
It was elementary pick up books time.

They start the kids young with electronics there. (;

Krystin and Logan were so happy to get their books,
School IDs, class schedules (which are insane)
and their lockers!
School buses, which don't go out by us, shucks!
Wouldn't matter anyhow, as the kids are in XC.

The kids were confused where their classes were,
so the principal, personally came out to show them,
and to answer any questions about the school they might have.

Kay looked cute on the kiddy bench.

Oh, BONUS!
We found a back pack shop in one of the malls!
All three kids picked back packs.
YAY! (One less thing to do!)
By the time we headed home it was rush our, yuck...
But, we made it, and it was a fun day...

We finished the day by grabbing Daddy from work,
taking a bus to the airport and having dinner
and dessert at our favorite places there!

Can you see this?
I will have to scan in their class schedules.
It is nothing like I have ever seen.
No two days are the same.

Lots to do between now and this weekend,
and then Monday school!
