Happy 17th Birthday, Logan!

I am behind in posting this.
(Although, I cheated and set it to show on May 26th)

With the move, Logan's wisdom teeth removal, and the end of the school year.
Yes. I am behind.

None-the-less...

I wanted to Say Happy 17th Birthday
to
my Sweet Boy!
Logan,
I LOVE YOU!
I am SOOO Grateful to be your Mommy,
and
So Grateful to be able to celebrate 17 years with you.

You have a heart of gold and our family wouldn't be complete without you!

Logan's birthday was not exactly ideal this year.
Two days before his birthday,
he had his Wisdom teeth removed.

They needed to come out,
we were leaving the country,
and it was the LAST three day weekend of the year.

He had such a positive attitude!

Todd landed Friday Night from Hong Kong,
Saturday was 'their' birthday's'

Logan, poor swollen Birthday face!

We hadn't seen Todd in 5 long weeks.
That was HARD!
I NEVER, EVER, EVER want to do that again.

 Our good friends the Mushets
Came all the way over to our neck of the woods,
to have a Good Bye/Birthday Lunch with us.

It was awesome!

Later that night,
some of the kids friends through a surprise
"Good Bye/Happy B-day Party" for them.

Poor Logan was really not feeling well,
but I think had a good time!

For Logan's Birthday
we wanted to give him an IPAD.

Since we were moving though,
and electric plugs and the such are different in Hong Kong...
That and moving electronics is scary...
We wrapped a tiny picture of a white and black Ipad for Logan to open.
Then, told him he could choose which he wants to get in HK.

He chose white.

He seems to like it.
He even got a keyboard for it,
that works with his ipod too!

Happy Birthday, Logan!

Thank you for 17 years, so far!
Here is to a 100 more!

I love you,
my baby boy!

Logan's Wisdom, removal....

Wow.

Some of my LEAST favorite
Parenting Moments...
Are moments when to be a GOOD Parent..
You have to PAY someone to torture your child.

Really.
It just seems, so barbaric....

Today was another one of those days.

It was Logan's turn to have his Wisdom Teeth removed.

It was time.

I would have, maybe, waited 'til Summer,
but
With Moving to Hong Kong in June....
Now is the time.
3 day weekend
(sorry about the birthday teeth extraction Logan)
His Birthday (and Todd's) is on Saturday...

But, in the name of Good Parenting...
That is what I did today.
(YES, I MISSED TODD EXTRA!)

Took this sweet, smiling guy
to get his Wisdom removed....
(In the waiting room)

The office is not open on Fridays...
and
The only time they had available was 2pm...
That and my experience with Kayla and sedation in September....
Made me think that having Logan fast til 2pm,
and maybe the sedation wouldn't work for him either wasn't the best choice...
So, we opted to ask for Gas...

He was being really brave,
despite just experiencing what Kay went through a few months ago...
He was a little uneasy about no sedation,
but the idea of gas made it ok.

They called him back,
and said Gas wasn't going to be available?
That he should be ok without...

He called me back there,
to sit by him...
and hold his hand, just in case he needed it.
Which, I was happy to be able to do...

Luckily, when the Dentist came back he said gas was available!!!
Thank YOU LORD!
Logan looked relieved.
I looked way more relieved, I am SURE!

It wasn't an easy process, took almost 2 hours...
Logan inherited Todd's neanderthal Wisdom.
The teeth have about twice the roots they should,
and they are at 90 degree angles at the end.
The dentist had to seriously work for it!
Luckily, between the shots and the gas and the ipod...
Logan was A'OK!

His first question upon completion -
"Can I run tomorrow?"
- Uhm, No, rest...
Second question -
"Can I go to school at least?"
- Don't recommend it...

After getting up, and while I was checking out.
He was full of love and wanted to hug everyone. LOL!
Thank you Gas for doing your job!

We had to grab Krystin (from a friend's house by school) before heading home.  Without a Kayla or a Daddy to help drive, just worked out that way.  So we had him home within an hour.  Glad he was doing well.

We put some ice on his cheeks when we got home.
He was still buzzing from the gas.
Even with a mouth FULL of gauze he was babbly.
It was cute and funny.

 My boy likes real food,
so the offer of a shake for dinner didn't thrill him,
but he ate it graciously enough.

Real food soon my SON, soon...

Finally, after 4 hours, he is resting....
So sweet.
I pray that his recovery is smooth....
His doctor was especially concerned about one extra difficult tooth, and said to watch it.

2 kids down.  1 to go...
Poor Krystin,
Sorry, Krystin, that you had to watch BOTH your sibs go through this first!

Pets in Hong Kong - Birds

PART 2 - read Dogs first....

I won't lie...
Relocating a precious, and rare baby bird to ASIA
where they have Avian INFLUENZA precautions
is not an EASY, uncomplicated process....

There is red tape on BOTH Sides.

My baby birds are Appendix II on the Cities list, as well.
Meaning they have to have a special export permit issued by the U.S. Fish and Wild Life.
Besides all the OTHER permits and health requirements.
To obtain the permit, well, lets just say I submitted 50 pages of documentation.
Which could take up to 90 days to process it said on the paperwork.
We didn't have 90 days.  It would be too hot to ship them. :(
They must have liked my paperwork, because we had the permit in under 3 weeks.
(Ok, maybe I was a little over the top and included baby pics and everything.)

Then, there are the Health requirements.
They are nothing Less than confusing and frustrating.
Even our Vet was very confused and she specializes in relocation  of dogs to Japan.
I know dogs are not the same as birds, but she specializes in birds in her practice too.
I mean really, how many relocation's of birds would someone see, and to Hong Kong?

Anyhow, Just to list a few crazy requirements.
28 days Quarantine, before leaving, if you don't want quarantine on arrival.
We spoke with the HK government and got permission for HOME quarantine!
THANKFULLY.. As  that probably would have been a deal breaker for me.
Then the birds were to be on medication, even though they were not sick, for over a month...
Vet wanted to do daily shots..  I made sure to get it from the HK government that at home by beak was just fine, and it was.  Daily shots would have been another DEAL BREAKER for me....
And they had to have an Avian flu test (dropping would suffice for the test, but the vet insisted on doing a swab to make sure sample was good, poor bird butts)...  But, time was limited temperatures were rising, and there is ONLY ONE  lab in the US that does the TEST and it takes 2 weeks. It took some convincing to get the vet to do it before the birds completed the meds (that had nothing to do wtih the test)...
But, I KNEW the window that we could send them was quickly closing, as the temperatures were lingering in the mid 80's and within a few days it would be in the 90's and then we wouldn't be able to send them until September, which with the dogs already there would be a problem...
Todd had to apply for their Special permit to import in HK as well, usually takes 5 days. No fuss. With the dogs fast no problems.  With the birds, they had to verify their Cities Export Permit with the U.S.  took an extra week.  It basically was insane.  Birds were to leave on Tuesday (they have to fly out within 5 days of  Health Certificate being signed and the cert has to be signed within 5 days of Avian flu result)...  and then there was the weather.  Oh my crazy...

Essentially, I got the bird paper work Monday by noon from HK,
had the last Vet check Monday afternoon.
Tuesday Morning, at 630am, Krystin went with me to take them, to help..
We had to go to the USDA Vet to get the Vet paper work signed off.
For birds they have a special person do it,
she looked at me as she was taking the paperwork,
like it was going to be rejected.
Went away for  about 20 mins, came back
and said it looked perfect!
Thank GOD!
Then we had to go to the Cities government office
to have them inspect the birds and their crates
and sign officially to clear them to Go!

-By the way, everyone under the sun was in LOVE with the birds and had to come out and talk to them.
They are such charmers...

Thankfully, that all went smoothly.
Plane was to leave at 12:55pm..
Then we were off to the scary warehouse....

I Love my baby Blue-streak...
Sending her was probably one of the hardest things I have done.
I literally cried for almost 24 hours, ok maybe more....
The idea of my sensitive, sweet girl being in a little box,
in the dark for 16 hours PLUS, with no fresh FRUIT!
MADE ME SO SICK...

At least she had Xia with her.
Z, is our little jester.  Super outgoing and chatty!
She wasn't alone.
Z, usually just goes with things and lives in the moment.
Happy little girl.
How could Indy be sad with such a cute, charming  travel companion.

At the warehouse,
After they took the girls back they placed them in the warehouse.
I could HEAR my Indy crying...
I started to panic.
She was terrified of the forklifts...
I couldn't take it.
-I was two seconds from saying FORGET it. I can't DO THIS!--
I spoke to the VERY nice lady who was helping us
(and had helped us with the dogs previously).
I explained how my baby was scared.
What could we do?
She said, "Oh, no worries. I will bring them in the office, and she said birds are driven over to the  airplane in an air conditioned van."  She said she just put the birds on the other side of the door in the warehouse for ease of the van picking them up, but they are more than welcome to wait in the office.  Indy and Z were so happy to come back in.   Ok, Mommy was too...

Pics from the morning...

Xia, getting ready to go.

Indy, enjoying a snack, before leaving.

Waiting at the warehouse.

On arrival, we knew they would have to spend 1-3 days at the pet hostel awaiting yet another Avian flu test, verifying that they didn't magically get it in the last day. Parents (owners) are welcome any time to hang with them.
Since, they landed at 7pm, yes 4am CA time again, they couldn't run the lab test til the next morning.

Oh, and to make me worry just that much more...
It was predicted to be around 84-85 degrees, originally when we booked them to fly.
Cutting the temp restriction close, but landing at night, so it should be ok.

The day the birds landed was the hottest of the year - 93!!
88 degrees when they landed!
GRRRRRRR!!!
I was already panicked about them dehydrating.
No.  I did NOT sleep at all.
(I mean yes I packed a LOT of water on their kennels, but what if?)

The HK government seems to genuinely love animals,
and had an air conditioned van waiting for them.

Daddy had fresh mango juice for them too.
A pic, that Daddy took for me on the sly after they landed.
It is a government facility, you aren't really supposed to do that.
Seeing those sweet little beaks safe made me cry more!
SO happy and grateful for their safety!

The HK official was very nice and ran the test from fresh droppings, rather than a swab.
No more stress for my girls.
Well, other than a bonus night in the pet hostel.
They were the only guests, and they stayed in their own kennels, so it wasn't too bad.

And the test that took two weeks to get result for in the U.S....
Only took a few hours in HK.
The birds were released to go home later that afternoon.

And when Todd sent me these pics from the flat..
I couldn't be happier or MORE dedicated to our journey!

On an aside, if you are wondering...
As long as we keep all of our original paperwork the birds are always welcome home to the USA...
Yes, they will have to be quarantined for 30days, but at home....

Pets in Hong Kong - Dogs...

Since, first setting foot in Hong Kong, over a year ago,
I knew, if there was a possibility or chance....
of living in Hong Kong with the kids,
We would have to do it!!

However,
making that happen seemed quite the challenge
AND IT IS, TRUST ME...
Besides the complications and logistics of moving internationally...
to the other side of the world.

We have PETS!

Pets that are more than pets to us, but family members.
WE LOVE our creatures....

So, they would have to be able to come too.
I know, just the thought of moving to HK,
probably is enough to make most people shutter,
but moving with 2 dogs and 2 BIRDS,
that is nothing less than insanity.

Dogs First...

The process to bringing dogs really isn't bad.
Other than the fact that HK government requires them
to get a second Rabies shot and another microchip.
 Pretty smooth.
No quarantine, if you make sure all the prerequisites are met.
They even make sure someone is available when the dogs land,
so you are home with them pretty quickly.

That doesn't mean that the process
of the dog's travel was fun for them.
24 hours in a crate.
UNDER THE PLANE! (temp/pressure controlled)
(no animals are allowed on the planes flying into HK, shuttter!)
Rough, probably terrifying 24 hours for the doggies...
Oh, and we had a time limit,
as they will not ship if temps rise above 84 degrees...
The temp the day the dogs were to land was predicted at 84.

International export of animals has MANY requirements...
I am not even going to go into the zillions of hours I spent researching everything and verifying every last detail with the US government, HK government, and Airlines (who were very confused).
By far, HK gorverment was AMAZING, friendly and easy to work with...

I had to buy and return the first set of crates that I was told met international criteria,
after researching more I realized the clasps wouldn't have been acceptable.
Glad I did, they actually did check them...
Oh, and I saw on only ONE of the many places I researched that Water bottles were necessary,
all the other sites said to attach some way where water could be added from the outside,
so I did both funnel and water bottle - both ended up being required... PHEW!

The children came with me to drop off the dogs,
for which I was very grateful.
I was a MESS, so sad/stressed/worried...

We had to take them to the USDA Vet to sign off everything that our regular Vet signed off first...
We were in LA by 730am
Then, we went to the airport to take the dogs.
I mean they are leaving on a plane from LAX at the airport...
No one seemed to know where to drop them... GRRRR
and ultimately, it wasn't at the airport....
It was a mile from the airport at a warehouse.  Go figure.
Lucky, I am neurotically early, so we had time to spare.

They just thought they were having a fun bye-bye day!

Poor unsuspecting pups.
Pics at the airport as we waited in line, needlessly, yah...
Dogs got a little extra free time!

Oh yes, it was fun carting around 2 dogs and 2 crates to the airport for no reason.
OOPS... Thank goodness kids were with me.
The first three people we talked to assured us that we were in the right spot and us to drop them at the regular airline check in, seemed wrong, but I had no clue....  Even the guy from the airline was confused and had to get a manager.  He didn't even know that pets ever went on the plane.  Yah... It was interesting.

But, we got an address.  Raced back to the car and found the drop off location.

The place was a big warehouse, my poor pups were reduced to cargo...

Honey was NOT PLEASED....

Lily was much LESS pleased than Honey,
in fact she was SUPER Mad!

Since, our dogs were not use to being in kennels.  I placed the kennels in the common area  of our home weeks before they went out and put treats and chews in them.  Took them on car rides in the kennels, so it would feel comfortable.  Honey would just lay in her kennel all day. She loved hers.  Lily was a little wiser to the idea, only two days before she left did she go in there on her own to nap...

After what seemed like forever they landed at 4am Calitime
7pm HK time...

They MADE it, safe and sound!!

on arrival.

Proof that they weren't too traumatized from their journey.
Here is a pic Todd sent me last week.
They still hang out in their kennels for fun,
and sometimes even together! (:

Track Finals/ LEAGUE CHAMP!

What an amazing Season!

Kids were healthy and mostly injury FREE!
That in and of itself is a reason to celebrate, really!

PRELIMS

Logan and Krystin both qualified for League Prelims
Logan in the Varsity 800 meter
Krystin in the 400, 200, 4x400 and Pole Vault
(your exhausted just thinking about that many events, right?)

Prelims were on May 1st Tuesday after lunch.
We arrived at the meet at 12:45pm, left at 7:30pm... LONG DAY!
Krystin was scheduled to Jump for Pole Vault at 3pm.
Her next event, HER EVENT, the 400 was to be at 4:30p
Well, they scheduled her to jump in the second flight of Pole Vaulters (each flight takes about an hour), so it clashed with her MAIN event.  She asked to change to the first flight, but was told that she couldn't and to come back after the 400 it would be fine.

She Took first in the 400 overall (there were three heats)
Ran strait over to pole vault, but they had just closed the event...
She was VERY SAD...

But really, she missed out on Pole Vault and took first in the 400,
still pretty awesome!

She qualified for Finals in the 200 as well.
4x400 goes strait to finals, no prelim.

Logan was awesome in his race too and qualified for Finals,
 as an alternate.
Really fast race.

premeet waiting

Krystin waiting by Pole Vault, trying to figure out how to make it work.

 It was pretty darn chilly...
Logan pretended to take a nap

THE 400!
 Krystin was favored to win.
That is a LOT of pressure!
She is doing the nervous pose...

Logan giving me the,
"Mom, really you are going to stand on the side of the dirt hill to cheer sorta look."

 She BLEW them away!

Logan's 800

He ran a GREAT race, and even PR'd!

FINALS

Finals took place just three days later on Friday...
and
To make things more fun...
They started at 4:30pm...
Krystin and Logan's take zero period.
They have to be at school around 6:30am...
Krystin's last event was at 8:40pm...

Talk about a burn out schedule,
and they are racing against the TOUGHEST competition all year!
The fastest of the fastest....

Perfect weather though!
Really, one of the best weather days this season!
It was SOOO cold at the last meet,
Krystin requested running pants.
 She wore her special shirt!
 Chillin'
 Krystn's possy
Then wasn't sure if she was hot or cold.
So she just walked around like this, really she did.

Kayla tried to balance Krystin's silliness out with her own.
Yes, she walked around with a critter on her head. HA!
I love that my kids don't care what anyone thinks! LOL!

Getting ready for her 400 race!
Still favored to win.
She looks cool and confident, right!
(She was sooo nervous she looked pail as she went to warm up!)

and they are OFFFF

She ran SOO FAST!
So fast!
She got a new PR!
She wanted to break 60, and technically her feet did,
but they judge by when your chest crosses the finish.
60.01 (yes, only 100th of a second off!)
Actually less than 0.3 secs off the all time record for this meet (set in 1980)!

She hadn't even caught her breath and they were interviewing her!

The moment she was hoping for and working for all year!
League Champion in the 400meter!!
 Congrats, Krystin!
You are amazing!!!
 She was very motivated,
because Logan was Sophomore League Champion in XC!

Ok, the kids friends are silly too! Love it!

Logan's 800 Meter
Holy Moly was it fast!

Logan ran so hard and fast! I was amazed!

The 200 Meter
She ran this just for fun!

She was number 3.
Look how close the times were!
Crazy!

She was thrilled to still medal!

 Awww, feel the love!
Trying to stay warm as the sun goes down..
We were right next to the coast... brrr

The 4x400 meter
(pics didn't come out well due to lighting)

Her team BLEW away the other teams!
By a LOT!
So, they came in first
League Champs in the 4x400
Yay, more bling for Krystin!

Watching the boys team from the sidelines..
 Finally, time to go home!
GREAT NIGHT!!
