Foreign Fruit: Taiwan Custard Apple

Foreign Fruit:   Taiwan Custard Apple

Doesn't the name just sound intriguing?

I am always astounded at the diversity and abundance of edible delicacies that God has provided to us on this Earth.  How lucky are we to have such a totally awesome planet?!

Well, check out this 'Apple'
Pretty amazing, huh?

Guesses as to what it would look like inside ranged from purple, green, orange, yellow and whitish.
Todd was right on with whitish!
Check out those seed, so unusual!

Ok, now the downside of not knowing the fruit is not knowing what to expect.  This fruit was SO hard to cut even with a sharp knife.  Now is that normal, or is it just not ripe enough?  I don't know!

The fruit was not a hit with the kids.   They described it as having the texture of styrafoam with a bitter taste.

Logan wasn't too sure about the scent either.

Todd thought about it, and didn't think it was too bad.

I didn't think it was too bad either, but it definitely had a little spice to it.

Not our favorite though, sadly, the poor little custard apple will probably not be on the grocery list any time soon...

It wasn't ripe. You should find the inside soft and sweet. Ever have a Cherymoya? They are kinda the same but Cherymoyas are way bigger.

Thanks! We will have to give it another try. Seemed like it might not be ripe. Haven't heard of the Cherymoyas yet, but will definitely look for them. :)

Lon & I just got back from a 2 week trip to Brazil (to pick up his parents after their 2 year mission), where we had a cherimoya, which looks very similar. The one we had was kinda squishy (kind-of like (for lack of a better word) snot and tasted very yummy. I am assuming yours was not quite ripe and you should give it another try. Lon had the cherimoya while on his mission in Bolivia and was so excited to find the fruit again! BTW, I love reading about your adventures in HK and enjoy your strange/different fruit posts.
