Foreign Fruit: Fear Factor edition

Durian

The very loved-detested, controversial fruit out here.

This fruit, that is subject of so much discussion, has been high on our list to try, since we moved here.
Why haven't we tried it as of yet?
Well, it isn't because it is hard to find.
It is everywhere.
They even make it into ice cream, cookies, you name it...

So, why haven't we tried it, yet?

Frankly, because it is hard to get yourself to try a fruit that is described as tasting like cat pee.
Now, to be fair I have NEVER tried cat pee.
Maybe, cat pee is like chocolate, irresistibly delicious.
Seriously, though, if you have ever smelled cat pee, not appetizing.

Back to the Durian, well and the cat pee smell.
Durian, to us, smells a lot like cat pee.
While I have not tried tasting cat pee, I have smelled it, unfortunately.
We have actually bought some to try before, and it smelled up the entire house from the fridge so badly we threw it out, before tasting it.

Yesterday, we decided it was time.
It was time the CHILDREN braved trying it.
You see, that is why you have children, so they can be brave and you can film it.

Durian even looks like something out of some sci-fi movie:
Maybe the spikes are a warning?
Warning:  Weird mutant looking, cat pee smelling fruit inside!

I found these pics online when I searched Durian, see what I mean.
Smells bad!

Ok.  So it SMELLS a little off, but so does Provolone cheese,  and we love that!

People LOVE this fruit out here, it can't be that bad, right?

We didn't buy a full Durian, just a little ready to eat chunk.
Looks a little meaty.

The texture of cutting it, not tasting it is hard to describe.  Kind of like decomposing flesh?  It was soft yet almost firm on the outside, until cutting into it.  Then, squishy and appeared to melt (decompose) or perhaps  fall a part as you cut it further. Squishy!  Appetizing description, I know.

So.  How did the kids like the Durian.....????

Watch and see!

Flavor as described by the girls:  vomit.
Smells like cat pee.
Tastes like vomit?
What's there not to love?
